The New Deal armchair was designed in 1929 by Savina Pisani based on her husband Renzo Frau’s sketches. Looking at the distinctive design of the armrests and the studded edging on the back, it is easy to see that the New Deal is in fact an early version of the famous Vanity Fair, characterised by its more compact dimensions and circular backrest.
With its smooth, taut lines and the welcoming, aerodynamic design typical of Art Deco, the New Deal armchair is a great classic from the Poltrona Frau catalogue.
The supporting structure of the New Deal armchair is made of seasoned beech. The suspension is provided by biconical steel springs secured to jute straps. The seat padding is made of rubberised horsehair, whilst the backrest and armrests are padded with hand-moulded vegetable horsehair. The seat cushion is filled with goose down. The legs are made of beech stained dark walnut. The upholstery is in Pelle Frau®. A row of leather-covered tacks, applied by hand, finishes the back and sides of the armchair.
